The day job and college have been busy but I've
managed to make some progress with The Dream.
I faced my fear and spoke to an accountant recommended by a friend. He was very lovely, and as a result of our chat I have discovered that it is important to register as self employed with the Inland Revenue even though I work part time. And you have to register within three months of becoming self employed.
The forms arrived this morning so I have to fill them in and return them asap to get everything up and running in plenty of time.
I also need to set up spreadsheets of all my work related income and outgoings; and to keep all relevant paperwork and receipts, which is both a challenge to my adminophobia, and a happy justification of my tendency to hoard.
The other thing I've been working on is a couple of online stores using ace sites like cafepress.com and spreadshirt.com. If you haven't come across them, these sites enable users to upload designs and effectively outsource the fulfilment and production of t-shirts. There are two strands - one involving a series of small cutesy cartoons, predominantly aimed at kids, and one more mainstream funky-casual clothes for grown ups.
My hope is that this is a low-cost starting point before heading into the higher overhead world of dedicated production.
There's some polishing and finesses-ing to be done to the shops and the designs over the next week or two, and then I have to work out how to market them!
